Replacing Your Toner Cartridge

Unlike printer ink cartridges, which contain liquid ink, a _*toner cartridge*_ contains toner, a fine powder which is is used in laser printers and photocopiers to form the text and images printed on a page.

Heat sensitive, the toner is fed from the _*toner cartridge*_ and subjected to heat which bonds it with the paper. Originally, toner was poured directly into a special reservoir in the printer. Today however, it is fed directly from independent toner cartridges housed in the printer.

These printer toner cartridges can be easily removed and replaced when they are empty, while some 3rd party companies provide a toner cartridge refill service, allowing empty cartridges to be reused.

Toner Cartridges & Printer Types

In general, it is laser printers which use toner cartridges as their ink source. Inkjet printers, as the name suggests, tend to make use of liquid ink which is sprayed onto the page, whereas laser printers commonly use laser toner cartridges for their printers.

Toner Cartridge Colours

Toner cartridges are generally available in the the four basic CYMK colours, which can be combined to form any necessary colour. These are the cyan toner cartridge, as well as a yellow, magenta, and finally, a black toner cartridge.

Empty toner cartridges should be properly disposed of. In general, you can return a used printer toner cartridge to the manufacturer or supplier at the same time as you purchase a replacement. The toner cartridge suppliers will usually have the facilities to recycle toner cartridges.

Some toner cartridges can, as we have mentioned, be refilled. However, using a recycled or refilled toner cartridge may void your warranty, so it is often advisable to use only original, genuine toner cartridges for your model of printer if your warranty includes such a clause, and leave the toner cartridge recycling to the professionals for correct disposal.

Compare Toner Cartridges

When you need to find a toner cartridge for your printer, it’s a good idea to compare the price offered by more than one store. Cheap toner cartridges are not easy to find, and refilled cartridges, which may be cheaper, may also be of a lower quality, or yield less prints. If you shop around for cartridge toner, you may find a discount or special offer. If you find a reasonable price, it may be a good idea to buy a number to keep some spares in stock.
