Tips for printing high resolution photos at home or at the office

Published: May 10, 2016

In these modern times, spools and photo development has almost become obsolete. Thanks to how technology has evolved, newer and better computer equipment is brought out each year, prompting more and more people to print their own photographs at home or in the office.

So, what do I need to start printing my own quality photos?

  • When purchasing a printer, inkjet is often the best option if you plan to print images and creative presentations. While laser can be significantly cheaper, the money spent on cartridges will be worth it as the quality of your photos will be unparalleled.
  • Get familiar with your printer’s editing features, most printers allow you to view your photos before you print them out and then you can edit your photos for best results.
  • In general, gloss paper is best for photograph printing but also the most expensive, so if you can afford it, experience with different types of paper until you are satisfied with the results.
  • If you are printing from a computer, investing in a photo editing software programme will give you that extra edge to creating high quality photos.
  • Don’t stretch your print size beyond the pixels in your photo – make sure that your image is of a high enough resolution (300 dpi or more) if you want to go big. The dpi (dots per inch) basically tells you how big you can go – for example, if your image is 2000 × 3400 pixels divide this by 200 or 300 dpi to get your ideal photo size.
  • Keep your printer clean – it’s not always great for a printer to sit idle from one month to the next. Run a print head clean every month or two (usually found under your printer options in your control panel) and send something (anything) to print, at least once a week.
